Nystatin (Generic Nystop)
What Is Nystatin?
Nystatin is an antifungal medication that’s used to treat fungal and yeast infections in the mouth and skin.
It can be used as a liquid or an ointment, and will only work to treat infections that are fungal or yeast. This will not work on bacterial or viral infections. Your doctor or healthcare provider might prescribe this medication for other conditions, too.
How Does Nystatin Work?
As Nystatin is what’s called an antifungal medication, the purpose of the drug is to treat fungal infections. When it is used or applied, Nystatin will kill the fungus in your mouth that is causing the infection. The process can take a few days, and you should continue to use this drug for multiple days after your symptoms have cleared up to ensure that it does not come back.
What Is Nystatin Used For?
Fungal infections can develop in the mouth, as well as the lining of the stomach and your intestines.
The purpose of the medication is to counteract the infection by killing the fungus that’s causing it.
Taking the drug will not only stop the growth of fungi in the mouth, stomach, and intestines but will also kill it to prevent it from coming back later on.
Conditions that Nystatin is commonly used to treat:
- Oral Thrush
- Cutaneous Candidiasis
- Vaginal Yeast Infections
- Diaper Rash
The conditions mentioned above are just some of the few that Nystatin can be used to treat.
What Are the Side Effects of Nystatin?
If you have been prescribed Nystatin, you should be aware of the possible side effects that you might experience when taking the drug. Some of the more common symptoms of Nystatin are:
- Experiencing irritation in the mouth
- Having an upset stomach, diarrhea, or vomiting after use
- Rashes on your skin
Taking Nystatin may also result in serious side effects, too, and if you experience any of the following you should stop taking this medication and get in touch with your healthcare provider immediately:
- Difficulty breathing after use
- Accelerated heart rate
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Red or purple rashes on your skin.
The listed side effects are not exhaustive. If you experience any other symptoms that are out of the ordinary, it’s important to seek medical advice and assistance right away.
How to Take Nystatin?
Nystatin may come in multiple different forms with different needs of use. If you have been prescribed oral Nystatin, such as Nystatin liquid, then you should make sure to shake the bottle before use and measure out the correct amount with a syringe or appropriate piece of equipment. Once measured, put the medicine in your mouth for a minimum of 30 seconds, while swishing it around. Swallow when you can no longer keep it in your mouth.
Nystatin cream is also an available alternative, which is applied 2 to 3 times each day, and you should use it as your doctor has instructed.
You must ensure that you do not take more of this medication than you have been instructed to, as overdosing can be dangerous. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.
You must not eat or drink anything for at least 30 minutes after taking this medication.
