Levofloxacin (Generic Levaquin)
What Is Levofloxacin?
Levofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It belongs to the fluoroquinolone antibiotic class and is most commonly available as a tablet or oral solution. The brand name of levofloxacin is Levaquin.
Levofloxacin is considered a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which means it is effective against a wider range of bacterial infections.
How Does Levofloxacin Work?
Levofloxacin works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial DNA. DNA is the genetic code of bacteria and is crucial for the cell’s expression and replication. Levofloxacin promotes the breakage of DNA by converting two bacterial enzymes, DNA gyrase, and topoisomerase IV, into toxic enzymes that inhibit DNA repair and manufacturing. This then kills the bacteria.
What Is Levofloxacin Used For?
Levofloxacin is generally prescribed only in cases where the bacterial infection cannot be treated with safer antibiotics because of its increased risk of severe side effects.
Levofloxacin is used to treat:
- pneumonia
- rhinosinusitis
- acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- bacterial prostatitis
- pyelonephritis
- urinary tract infection
- skin infections
- prophylaxis
Levofloxacin may also be used for treatment in those who have been exposed to anthrax or specific variants of the plague.
Side Effects of Levofloxacin
Some of the common side effects of levofloxacin include headache, nausea, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, diarrhea, and constipation. These side effects are generally mild.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- fast or pounding heartbeat
- fluttering in your chest
- sudden dizziness
- shortness of breath
- muscle weakness
- breathing problems
- a skin rash, no matter how mild
- increased pressure inside the skull
- seizures
- liver problems (loss of appetite, upper stomach pain, clay-colored stools, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes)
Levofloxacin can also cause serious side effects, including nerve damage, tendon problems, low blood sugar, or serious mood or behavior changes. Stop taking levofloxacin and call your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- irritability
- headache
- hunger
- burning pain
- numbness/tingling
- agitation
- confusion
- problems with concentration or memory
- paranoia
- sudden pain or movement problems in your joints
- thoughts of suicide
In rare cases, levofloxacin may damage the aorta, which could result in dangerous bleeding or death. If you experience severe and constant pain in your stomach, chest, or back while taking levofloxacin, seek emergency medical help.
Some people may be allergic to levofloxacin and exhibit symptoms such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in the throat or face. Others may have a severe skin reaction of red or purple skin rash, peeling and blistering skin, burning in the eyes, skin pain, and a sore throat. If you have an allergic or severe skin reaction, seek emergency medical help.
How to Take Levofloxacin?
When prescribed levofloxacin, it is essential to follow all dosing instructions provided by your doctor, including the dosage amount and timing.
Levofloxacin must be taken with water and at the same time each day. To further support your kidneys as you take levofloxacin, be sure to drink extra fluids during the day.
Levofloxacin tablets can be taken with or without food. If you experience an upset stomach after taking levofloxacin, taking it with food may help ease these symptoms. However, the levofloxacin oral solution must be taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after a meal. Those taking the oral solution must be sure to measure the medicine carefully.
Continue taking levofloxacin for the complete amount of prescribed time, even if your symptoms improve quickly. Discontinuing the medication early may result in the infection lingering in your body, which could result in a recurrent or even more severe infection.
If you miss a dose, take levofloxacin as soon as you realize it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses at one time to make up for the missed dose.
