Valtrex

Valtrex is a brand name for the antiviral drug valacyclovir, which is used to treat conditions induced by the herpes virus. It is typically prescribed for people who have genital herpes, cold sores, and eye infections, among others, as well as for people who have a weak immune system and are thus more susceptible to viruses. It is also prescribed to children between the ages of two and eight as a treatment for chickenpox and for children twelve and over for cold sores.

It can be prescribed for both acute and chronic herpes virus outbreaks. In acute treatments, a Valtrex online prescription will speed up recovery time. For people with frequent outbreaks, it expands the time between outbreaks, as well as reduces the severity. It is not a cure against the herpes virus but instead inhibits the virus’ ability to spread, helping the body to fight the infection.

First approved for use by the FDA in 1995, it belongs to the purine nucleoside analog drug class.

What is Valtrex Prescribed For?

Valtrex is prescribed by healthcare professionals as part of treatment against viral conditions, most commonly the herpes virus. It is most commonly given to adults that have cold sores, genital herpes, and shingles. In children, it is given to treat chickenpox and cold sores.

How Does Valtrex Work?

Valtrex works by impacting the virus’ capability to spread. It is not a cure for the herpes virus but can reduce the severity and timeframe of herpes-related outbreaks, as well as conditions related to other viruses. It works by attacking the enzymes that allow the virus to build upon itself; in other words, to spread. By limiting the growth of the virus, it contains outbreaks and also makes it more difficult for the virus to spread to other people.

What Are The Side Effects of Valtrex?

A small percentage — around 10% — of people that take Valtrex may experience side effects from the medication. In the vast majority of cases, symptoms are mild. In any case, it’s important that the healthcare professional that prescribes the medication to you will do so because the benefits outweigh the downsides.

Common side effects of Valtrex include:

  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Skin sensitivity

More serious side effects are rare, but they have been reported, especially among patients who are 65 and older. These side effects include:

  • Tiredness
  • Pale skin
  • Fever
  • Unexpected bleeding.

If you experience any unusual side effects after taking the medication, it’s important to speak to your primary care provider as soon as possible.
